At work on the 22nd of July

15 stories from people who were at work on the 22nd of July 2011

What was it like to be at work on the 22nd of July 2011? To be among the first at the Government Quarter or on Utøya. To make impossible decisions, to encounter the injured, survivors and bereaved, or to be close by when the far-right terror struck the Worker’s Youth League (AUF) and the Norwegian labour movement.

In this exhibition you will meet 15 people who were at work on that Friday in 2011. They tell stories of the brutal attack, but also of a powerful will to help. Stories that may help prevent the 22nd of July from ever happening again.

The setting for the exhibition is Youngstorget. This square has played an important role in the struggle for democracy, and against racism and far-right extremism. When the bomb went off, the square also became a vital gathering point for rescue personnel and those affected from the Government Quarter.

And as a symbolic eyewitness to history: Right behind Youngstorget, a piece of the clock on Møllergata 19 was blown away. The piece corresponds to the time between the moment the bomb exploded and the moment the terrorist was arrested on Utøya. It bears witness to what actually happened on the 22nd of July, and why we must always continue the fight against hatred.
